And you thought every movie needs a proper climax

Stree movie unanswered questions - AYT Blog

Rajkumar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor starrer ‘Stree’ might have made some societal prejudices see the dawn of day once again, but it subsequently left the audience wondering too. Spooky and funny at the same time – which we get to see for the second time after Bhool Bhulaiya – the movie is a specialized conglomerate of atypical sagas and historical significance that is commonly found in many quaint little villages of India.

Amar Kaushik, the director behind this pioneering combination of cinematic excellence, has effectively accepted the fact that he himself wanted the climax of the movie to be a talking point. Needless to say, he did his math correct. The movie left the audience spellbound as well as made them construct their own versions of reality, while scratching their heads.

So what were the confusions?

Before that, let’s straighten out the movie a little bit for those who haven’t watched it.

Movie plot: In a small town of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, the fear of a female ghost grips the entire population, especially men, who are the only victims. As per the legend, a strange woman haunts the town at night during the four days of an annually held festival. She would call men by their name three times and abduct them if they turn back, leaving their clothes behind. Men are suggested to stay indoors and every house follows the principle of inscripting “O Stree Kal Aana” meaning “hey woman, come tomorrow”, outside their house’s wall.

Coming back to the confusions:

Who was stree actually?

Was it Shraddha Kapoor? If so, isn’t the idea of being at two places at the same time, quite dubious?

Was there any connection between Stree and Vicky’s mother?

And of course many others.

We posted the same questions to some of the netizens and here is what they believe.

According to Sandeep, a software developer based in Bangalore:

I think Stree was none other than Vicky’s mum. The ghost’s face had quite a resemblance with her. A close up shot of her photo frame at home has been shown twice in the movie and she was also a prostitute. Therefore, I think there has to be some connection between them. Also, Stree would take every man’s cloth, but couldn’t do the same with Vicky, most probably because you know why.

According to Chanda, a housewife based in Odisha:

Shraddha Kapoor is the stree. She was powerful enough to create illusions, which fooled the entire town – including Vicky – into believing that she was not the real ghost that was haunting the town.

According to Suraj, a content writer based in Bangalore:

Stree was neither Shraddha Kapoor nor Vicky’s mom. She was just a ghost! The barely visible connections that the movie has indirectly tried to showcase are mere attempts to mislead the audience. Shraddha Kapoor is just another Daayan who was looking for ways to enhance her black magic prowess.

Clearly, there are many plotholes in the movie. Well, audience, you’d be happy to know that Kaushik has announced a sequel that would hopefully explain the unexplained parts of the movie. Till then, keep speculating.
